          "Picture an ordinary evening: the laptop is closed, but you are still replaying the day's discussion. ‘Has work finished?’ and ‘Have I recovered from work?’ may have different answers.",
          "Finishing work, lying down or pausing training describes what we do. Recovery asks what changes in the relevant function over time. Research considers psychological and physiological processes; it does not define recovery by a particular resting posture.[1][6]",
          "This does not make rest unimportant. The distinction separates creating conditions for recovery from judging whether recovery has occurred. An empty schedule alone cannot tell us what has happened to attention, fatigue or a particular bodily function.",

          "Work can stay on our minds after we leave the workplace. Occupational recovery research uses psychological detachment to describe mentally disengaging from work during non-work time. Leaving a location and disengaging mentally are different experiences.[1]",
          "A meta-analysis linked detachment, on average, with less fatigue and better self-reported sleep and well-being. Average associations with physiological stress indicators were not significant. That does not establish causality or show that disengaging from work restores every system.[2]",
          "The perseverative-cognition hypothesis offers one account of prolonged activation: worry or rumination may continue before or after an event. A later meta-analysis examined physiological correlates, with results depending on the measure and design. This is not a claim that every thought about work is harmful.[9][10]",
          "The physiological result in that synthesis came from only three studies. It is a limited evidence base, not proof that mental disengagement has no physiological relevance. Most other evidence was self-reported and observational, which also limits causal interpretation.[2]"

          "Sleep research also shows that feelings and performance can diverge. Across two experiments involving 48 healthy adults, researchers compared repeated sleep restriction and total sleep deprivation. Repeated restriction produced cumulative cognitive deficits that subjective sleepiness did not fully reflect. This does not establish an individual recovery timetable, but it shows why feelings alone may give an incomplete account.[4]",
          "A separate experiment followed 30 healthy young adults through restriction and recovery sleep. After two extended recovery nights, sleepiness and IL-6 returned toward baseline, but sustained-attention performance did not improve. Feeling and function can therefore need separate descriptions even within the same recovery period.[11]"

          "Sport science considers life demands alongside training and competition. Expert consensus emphasises variation between people and within the same person over time. Performance, subjective experience and physiological changes after training are related but distinct observations.[6]",
          "To understand recovery, start with the demand, the function being observed and the observation period. Work, sleep and sport research use their own measures and time scales. Before comparing findings, check whether they answer the same question.",
          "Work breaks offer a practical example. A meta-analysis found small improvements in vigor and fatigue, while the overall performance result was not statistically significant. A useful account of a break names the benefit that was measured, rather than assuming a gain across every outcome.[12]",
          "The opportunities around a person matter too. Detachment research examines workload, working time, control and support alongside individual experience. An account of recovery should consider those conditions, while distinguishing observational associations from tested organizational interventions.[2]"
