How Are Physiological Reserve and Resilience Related?

Reserve can support resilience. Understanding the connection means separating available capacity from the response to a particular challenge.

Short answer

Physiological reserve concerns capacity available to meet additional demands; physical resilience concerns the ability to resist functional decline or recover following a health stressor. Reserve can support resilience, but the observed response also depends on the challenge and its context.[1][2]

The distinction is not simply ‘before’ versus ‘after’: assessments can estimate recovery potential, while repeated observations reveal how a particular response unfolds.[2]

Capacity and response

Imagine two people who complete the same everyday task comfortably. That observation describes what they can do under those conditions. It does not yet tell us how they would respond to an illness, a demanding task or another disturbance.

Physical-resilience research uses reserve to discuss capacity that may help a person meet a challenge. Resilience concerns resisting decline, recovering or adapting in relation to that challenge. Reserve can contribute to a resilient response, while the response also depends on the stressor and its context.[1][2]

Consider a hypothetical comparison after two different procedures. A quicker return to walking in one person cannot establish greater resilience unless the procedures, starting function, support and observation period are considered. A recovery curve becomes informative when the challenge and outcome are specified.[1][2]

Reserve asks about available capacity. Resilience asks how a response unfolds in context.

Why repeated measurements add information

A clinical assessment may estimate recovery potential before an event. Observing the same function before, soon after and later in recovery provides additional information: how much it changed and whether the change persisted.

Gijzel and colleagues argue for repeated measurements around health stressors in older adults. They also emphasize characterizing the stressor itself. A smaller functional change could reflect a different challenge, so recovery trajectories need that context before being compared.[2]

A trajectory therefore needs both axes to be meaningful: a specified function and a specified period. A smooth educational curve can make this idea visible, while an actual patient’s course may involve several disturbances and interacting systems.[2]

Reserve has different meanings in different fields

The word reserve also appears in cognitive aging. A whitepaper distinguishes cognitive reserve, brain reserve and brain maintenance to clarify different explanations for preserved cognition despite aging or disease.[3]

These distinctions are useful precisely because they name the domain. A measure used in cognitive research cannot simply be substituted for exercise capacity, a measure of organ function or a general feeling of energy. A meaningful claim about reserve specifies the capacity under discussion.[1][3]

The environment belongs in the account

Resilience research also examines psychological and social adaptation. A multidisciplinary discussion highlights influences at individual, family, community and cultural levels, with definitions that vary according to the context.[4]

This matters when interpreting an outcome: demands and available support belong in the explanation. A person’s difficulty after adversity cannot, by itself, establish a lack of effort or character. Psychological adaptation and a particular physiological response also need their own definitions and measurements.[4]

A clearer way to ask about resilience

A 2026 review argues that physical-resilience definitions need more explicit foundations, including what counts as the system, perturbation and recovery. Its proposed framework is part of a developing field, rather than a settled scoring method.[5]

When reading a study, ask what capacity was measured, what disturbance occurred, which function was followed and for how long. Then ask whether the authors measured a response or only a factor that might predict it.

TAP uses these distinctions to organize research. Its adaptation map and recovery curves illustrate relationships; they do not calculate an individual’s reserve or resilience.
