What the research tells us
After two extended recovery nights, sleepiness and IL-6 returned toward baseline in this experiment, while sustained-attention performance did not improve. Recovery depended on which outcome was examined.
What to keep in mind
A small short-term experiment does not set a universal recovery deadline. It cannot establish the long-term health effects of repeatedly alternating sleep restriction and recovery.
