Monitoring training status with HR measures: do all roads lead to Rome?
Martin Buchheit
Frontiers in Physiology · 2014
What the research tells us
Resting, exercising and post-exercise heart-rate measures answer different questions. Buchheit emphasises standardising timing, posture and exercise conditions, then comparing changes with measurement error, individual variability and training context alongside subjective and other functional measures.
Scope & interpretation
Cardiac autonomic recovery does not establish muscle, glycogen or whole-body recovery. Error varies substantially across measures and conditions. The review supplies no universal consumer HRV threshold, and its cited statistical decision methods require appraisal for each application.
Study at a glance
- POPULATION & SAMPLE
- Methodological review drawing mainly on endurance-sport research; no single intervention sample.
- EXPOSURE / INTERVENTION / SUBJECT
- Resting HR/HRV, exercise heart rate and post-exercise heart-rate recovery, with repeated within-person monitoring.
- OUTCOMES
- Measurement variability, training-related changes and interpretation of distinct heart-rate outcomes.
- TIME FRAME
- Short post-exercise periods through monitoring across training days, depending on the question.
