What the research tells us
Weekend recovery sleep did not prevent metabolic disruption when participants returned to insufficient sleep. The result concerns a repeating short-sleep pattern, rather than every possible benefit of sleeping longer.
What to keep in mind
Small laboratory groups and a short exposure period limit generalization. The study does not show that catch-up sleep has no value or provide a personal sleep-debt calculator.

- 36 healthy young adults: eight controls, 14 with sustained sleep restriction and 14 with weekend recovery followed by renewed restriction.

- Five-hour sleep opportunities, with or without two days of unrestricted weekend sleep, compared with nine-hour opportunities.

- Sleep, circadian timing, food intake, body weight and insulin sensitivity.

- Nine-night intervention patterns; the weekend-recovery group returned to restriction for the final two nights.
