What the study found

Across experimental and correlational studies, perseverative cognition was linked to differences in cardiovascular measures, cortisol and HRV. Associations depended on the parameter, design and measurement conditions.

Scope & limitations

60 eligible studies of physiological correlates of perseverative cognition in healthy participants.

Experimental inductions and observational associations answer different questions. The synthesis does not show that any particular thought causes long-term disease or establish one recovery measure.

Population & sample

60 eligible studies of physiological correlates of perseverative cognition in healthy participants.

Exposure or intervention

Worry and rumination, including experimentally induced and naturally reported perseverative cognition.

Outcomes

Blood pressure, heart rate, cortisol and heart rate variability, analyzed separately.

Time frame

Measurement durations varied and were examined as a moderator; no universal recovery interval.
